Imagine you just moved to the Sunshine Coast and wanted to find local produce or a community garden. Where would you start? Anne Gibson faced this question four years ago and realized there was no single source for information on local events and organizations related to sustainable living, so she started one.
Since then her original monthly email newsletter has grown into Green Journey, a rich website providing a range of resources and information to thousands of site visitors each month. The website includes numerous avenues for exploring and initiating steps towards more sustainable living, including a comprehensive calendar of upcoming events and workshops, a monthly newsletter, and “Inspiring Stories” - first-hand accounts of local individuals making changes to live more sustainably. The calendar in particular provides the “one-stop” planning tool that Anne dreamed of when she was new to the Sunshine Coast.
One of the most inspiring stories is that of Anne and the birth and growth of Green Journey. In moving to the Sunshine Coast and starting Green Journey, Anne has returned to the grow-your-own-food practices of her childhood in Sydney and branched out to take on the new skills and knowledge required to expand Green Journey.
When the task of creating and distributing the monthly Green Journey newsletter grew too big for her and her husband, she reached out to other community members and built a committed, growing team. Together these volunteers use their diverse talents to brainstorm and tackle each month’s tasks together, gaining encouragement and connection to each other and their community from their efforts. As Anne describes it, “we are each on our own journey . . . “ to live in more harmony on this planet.
